June found Kathryn in Africa. After a long flight from Chicago – Newark – Johannesburg, our weary bodies put our feet on African soil on June 1, 2024. Anticipation was keen as I love the jungle.
We were traveling with an Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT) group and knew that many wonderful adventures were planned. Camera in hand, along with the trusty phone with photo abilities, I could hardly wait until the first day of an early morning, jungle ride.
Today, I just want to share three shots of the wilderness beasts. The cheetahs are so very swift, and their camouflage skills are amazing. Thank goodness for sharp eyed guides to direct our attention through the shadows, trees, and grass. This pictured pair, however, arrived on the roadside and waited for my camera to get focused. Considering that cheetah are the fastest land animal on Earth, I’m delighted my body was safely resting in our jeep. Claws are hard on human skin and their teeth look sharp.

One never knew where the mischievous monkeys would pop up. In fact, one day, we heard the staff suddenly begin to scream, wave napkins, and even get out a sling shot. Peeping out from the tree branches near our snack table that afternoon, was a cluster of the speedy, little thieves. Before one could blink an eye, one monkey was on our picnic table scooping up salad from a plate. Fortunately it was not my plate, thus allowing me time to snap a photo of the crazy, hungry visitor.

Of course, the king of all animals, at least in my perspective, is the mighty lion. This large beast from the cat family, is found primarily (other than in zoos) in Africa and India. I must take someone’ word about India, as I have never wandered into that country. These 300–400-pound creatures prefer grassland and dusty, dense scrub over Illinois corn fields. Frankly, I would not really want to bring one home in my luggage, but catching them with my lens, while they rest in the sun, is a joy.

Today, as I jot these thoughts down, I give the Lord a quick thumbs up. I’m delighted that he created each of these creatures. I do wonder, however, how Noah managed to care for this trio, along with umpteen other species for over a month? I’m certain OAT will never advertise a forty-day cruise just like Noah’s. Do you think anyone would sign up and pay for that trip? I’m skeptical.
God is great and I love His world.
