Probably in the late 60’s the Arts Council had a day of performance by the Old State Capitol in Springfield, IL. Seth Leary, a sixth grader, had just finished reading aloud his short story. As reading coordinator for the school district, I had the privilege of interviewing him while tv cameras rolled. Recently I received a Facebook note from this young author, now a middle-aged guy. Seth included three photos of the day. More amazing, however, he included his web site where you, the reading audience, may zip to and read several of his recent creative short stories. Sometimes we forget the value of the arts and allowing young people to explore the first fruits of their artistic talents. We, in our desire to have everyone receive a solid bank of knowledge, forget that the arts are also important to our community and to enjoyment in our lives. Although I never exhibited any real artistic talent, I have loved the results of others. Classical music is my preferred music and so much time and energy has been spent supporting the Illinois Symphony Orchestra. It takes a team.
Today, I pause, thinking, it was truly worth the effort to organize this opportunity for students in the public school to share with the local tv audience. We thank Seth for refreshing my old brain about that wonderful day. I know his parents, Dick and Eleanor Leary, must be so proud of him.
