God's Care for His People

Lessons from our Kitty (16-Year-old cat who we call, “Kitty”)

Just as Kitty needs water frequently, so do we need to drink the spiritual water of life. Our sixteen-year-old cat is no longer able to leap over mountains (or even up on high sinks.) We must gently pick her up, turn on the water, and then she must of her own free will, do the drinking. Is that not what we as Christians must do?

Even if we wanted to leap over tall buildings, the spring in my legs is sprung. I must have a helping hand as I continue to build trust in God. BUT I must cry out, just as kitty meows loudly when thirsty. Then after His hand reaches down to my heart, I must reach out and take Christ’s palm and respond.

Kitty has free will. Sometimes she drinks and then hops down. Other times, as soon as I set her on the sink, turn on the water, off she goes, down to the floor. Sometimes I become like Kitty. I reach out to God in prayer or silent thought in my head. He hears (for He always hears) and is ready to lift me up but I must act. I don’t have to “meow” but I must turn on the hearing aid and listen.

So, my friends. Two suggestions tonight, this 23rd day of Pumpkin Month.

1 Ask yourself, “How often do I reach for the water of life and seek help from the great lifter of our faith?” If seldom, perhaps you will become dehydrated spiritually. Read a Ransom Note essay. Share a passage of scripture with a friend. Make a note in your daily prayer diary. Just meditate (but don’t snooze as you do.) Choose an action plan for your personality and lifestyle, but Go to God for a drink.

2 Who do you know that may need a bit of help or lifting up toward God and understanding of His Word? What about a lonely shut in who has given up on God? Maybe a teen too busy with technology or life to stop for help from the Great Communicator, God. Could it be a family member or a colleague at work? Check right now and find at least one person. Then hop to it. Figure out a way to bring the River of Life to them.

God bless and probably time for me to check on Kitty. BUT please give me a bit of feedback on your reactions to my thinking this evening. Writers (as well as Christians in general) need help, including feedback on their lives and actions in general. So . . . I wait to hear from you.
